KATHMANDU, AUG 06 - Newly appointed Chief Secretary Somlal Subedi has said that he would give continuity to the Bagmati Clean Up campaign launched by his predecessor.
Speaking at a programme organised to felicitate volunteers of Clean Bagmati Campaign on Wednesday, Subedi appreciated the work of incumbent Chief Secretary Leela Mani Paudyal, who is due to retire on Friday, saying that he would translate the campaign into a nationwide programme.
Paudyal, the chief architecture of the campaign, actively participated the campaign for 116 weeks since its inception on May 18, 2013. Distributing the certificate of appreciation to participants from various government and non-government organisations, he vowed to remain involved in the programme. After being felicitated by his successor, Paudyal said in a lighter vein: “We have invited our newly appointed chief secretary here so that he will feel moral pressure to give continuity to this programme.”
On the occasion, Paudyal gave away the special recognition certificate to Dr Raju Adhikari, coordinator of Gayatri Pariwar, a non-government organisation, which had taken a lead in launching of the campaign. Also felicitated were civil servants, employees of KathmanduMetropolitan City, Pashupati Area Development Trust, personnel from Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, artists, singers, and representatives of various organisations.
According to Adhikari, more than 300,000 people have volunteered in the Clean Bagmati Campaign, removing over 800 metric tonne of
sold waste from the river since the launch of the weekly programme.
