KATHMANDU, AUG 03 - The meeting of Political Dialogue and Consensus Committee was postponed indefinitely on Sunday after Nepali Congress, UCPN (Maoist) and Madhesi Janadhikar Forum-Loktantrik stood up in favour of naming and delineating the federal states before the promulgation of new constitution.
The ruling coalition CPN-UML and few fringe parties have raised objection to the task of naming and demarcate the states prior to the promulgation of constitution, saying it was against the 16-point deal forged among four major parties on June 8.
Nepal Majdoor Kishan Party Chairman Narayan Man Bijukchhe said the situation of constitution drafting has worsened after few prominent leaders of top parties visited Delhi. “I had already said that leaders would turn away from their position after coming back from Delhi,” he said, adding, “Ultimately that has proven to be correct.”
A UML leader Keshav Badal expressed his rue over Nepali politician’s failure to stick to the original agreement. “The 16-point deal was our original Nepali agreement,” he said, “But it’s difficult to discern under whose influence it took a different turn.”
CPN-UML has accused the NC of trying to prolong its government by pushing for naming and delineation of states. “In the 16-point deal, arrangements were made to resolve the naming and demarcation of states later, realising that it was not an issue that could be resolved immediately,” a UML Central Committee member said.
