KATHMANDU, AUG 07 - Minister for Information and Communications Minendra Rijal has underlined the need to protect the people’s right to privacy while implementing the right to information.

Addressing the Second National Convention organised by Freedom Forum on Friday, Rijal, however, said in the name of privacy government should not conceal the vital information that should be provided to the people. "Government should disclose the information that are crucial for public but individual's privacy should be protected," said Rijal.
Chairman of Development Committee of Parliament, Rabindra Adhikari said the government and public offices should provide genuine information to public and media to avoid misinformation. Adhikari said that transparency is vital for the institutional growth of democracy. He said the political parties should maintain transparency like other social institutions.
Chief Commissioner of National Information Commission Krishna Hari Banskota said the government secretaries who refused to disclose the information should not be provided any opportunity for foreign junket.
He informed that there has been improvement in disclosing the information but more needs to be done to implement maximum disclosure of government and public information.
Chairman of Freedom Forum Tara Nath Dahal said right to information and right to privacy would empower the individual. "If an individual is empowered, the democracy will be strengthened," said Dahal. The two-day long convention will deliberate the various working papers on RTI.
Former Chairman of Federation of Nepalese Journalist Dharmendra Jha said proper implementation of right to information will ensure the transparency and accountability in the society.
