KATHMANDU, AUG 18 - A delegation led by the Vern Buchanan, the president of the House Democracy Partnership of the US House of Representatives, called on Prime Minister Sushil Koirala at his office in Singha Dutrbar on Tuesday.
During the meeting, talks were held on Nepal-US diplomatic relations, US’ support in Nepal’s development process, the constitution writing and the reconstruction after the earthquake.
On the occasion, PM Koirala lauded continued US cooperation to Nepal in its socio-economic development, promotion of the rule of law and human rights as well strengthening the democratic institutions. He also appreciated the US support in the rescue, relief and temporary rehabilitation following the April 12 ‘Gorkha Earthquake’.

He also expressed gratitude to the government and the people of the US for selecting Nepal for the Millennium Challenge Cooperation Programme and for declaring strong commitment in the post-quake reconstruction.
The Prime Minister also shared to the US Reps that Nepal has reached the final phase of drafting a democratic constitution that would institutionalize the inclusive democracy along with federalism and republicanism. He stated that the new constitution based on democratic norms, values and principles will fully guarantee the fundamental rights of the citizens and the human rights. The PM said the Constituent Assembly (CA) has taken the first draft of the constitution to the people adopting the democratic process and was now including the same in the final draft after receiving the people’s feedback.
Prime Minister Koirala invited US investors to invest in Nepal in such condition, saying development would take pace after the promulgation of the constitution.
The US delegation comprises Ranking Member of the House Democratic Partnership David Price, Congress members Adrian Smith, Jim McDermott, David Jolly, Congress woman Dina Titus, House Armed Service Committee’s woman member Susan David, Democratic Staff Director Justin Wein and Sean Brady.
PM’s foreign relations advisor Dr Dinesh Bhattarai, disaster relief advisor Dr Ram Prasad Thapaliya, National Planning Commission (NPC) vice-chairman and the chief executive officer of the Reconstruction Authority Dr Govinda Pokharel and US ambassador to Nepal Peter W Bodde were present in the meeting.
