KATHMANDU: The Department of Transport Management (DoTM) has mobilised five monitoring teams in different locations in Kathmandu Valley to keep a close eye on the public transporters unfairly overcharging passengers.
According to Basanta Adhikari, Spokesperson of the DoTM, help desks have been set up in Balkhu, Gongabu, Koteshower, Gaushala and Kalanki after receiving complaints from the passengers that the vehicles plying on the short routes were charging them three times higher than the usual fare.
Each help desk has five monitoring officials led by an Under-Secretary.
Complaints about many vehicles to and from Hetaunda, Chitwan, Pokhara among other short routes are charging higher fares from passengers have been received, added Spokesperson Adhikari.
The situation emanated from the ongoing fuel crisis in the country and decision of the Nepal Oil Corporation to ration fuel to the public transport vehicles.
The DoTM has also requested the passengers to lodge complaints at the Help Desk if they were ever charged arbitrarily by the public transporters.
The Department will bring such vehicles to book and a charge a fine up to Rs 5,000, according to Adhikari.
In addition, the Department has also directed all the Chief District Officers in the country to take actions against those vehicles found charging higher fare to the passengers.
